Planning a Home Office Makeover

Henry has been working at home for ten years now. That’s ten years in three different houses and one apartment. There are certainly advantages to working at home. Over the years, he’s been able to spend more time with me and the kids. And having the freedom to make his own hours has been huge.

But there are also a few drawbacks to working at home. One being all of the distractions that are just outside the office door: kids wanting to play, a yard that needs to be mowed, a wife that has a project needing to be completed. This is why I think it’s important for him to have a space that can be cozy and inspire him to do great work.

When we built our house, the plan called for a vaulted ceiling in the family room. We decided to instead put another bedroom above the family room. It seemed like better use of the space. That extra bedroom is Henry’s office. Currently it is a blank canvas. It already has some nice features, like two dormer windows and 10ft ceilings, but it needs a few extras to make it a great work space.

Here’s a mood board showing what we have in mind.

For the wall behind his desk, we are planning to do shiplap painted a dark blue. Running almost the length of the wall, we will do a floating shelf to sit books, plants, and pictures.

As for the desk, I’m not sure if the dark stain color will work with the dark wall color. We love the desk, but we might refinish it in a lighter stain, or move it to a different room in the house and get a different desk for his office, like the one shown in the mood board.

Then we’ll add a table lamp and potted plant in front of the window.

I never was crazy about the light we chose for this room, so we’ll replace that one with a modern brushed brass fixture. And we’ll finish it off with a new rug.

I’m so excited about making over this room. I think it’s so important to have a space that you can focus and be inspired to do amazing work!
