How high should I hang my tv? This is a great question and important to answer before drilling holes in your wall, and even more important if you’re mounting the tv on a brick wall. Although there are a few exceptions, here is a pretty quick answer that should apply to most rooms.
The common rule is that a 42” TV should be mounted about 56 inches from the floor to the center of the TV, a 55” should be 61 inches, a 65” should be 65, and a 70” should be 67 inches from the floor to the middle of the TV. As you can see, the larger the television, the higher it should be hung.
Television Width | Hanging Height |
42 inches | 56 inches high |
55 inches | 61 inches high |
65 inches | 65 inches high |
70 inches | 67 inches high |
Tools You Will Need To Hang a TV
If you are hanging your television now, there are a few tools you will need. It is important to make sure you are prepared to hang it correctly. Here is a list of what you will need for this project.
- stud finder
- power drill and bits
- level
- socket wrench
- Philips screwdriver
- tape measure
- drywall screws
- snap toggles
- mount kit
A TV mount kit is very important because it will give you step-by-step instructions on how to mount your television.
Other Factors to Consider
If you are using the television in a room where you will be standing instead of sitting most of the time, like a game room, you may need to hang the TV a little higher. The dimensions above are based more on an area where you would be sitting most of the time as in a living area.
A place to consider hanging it a little lower would be a bedroom. A majority of the time you will be lying down in bed watching TV. Keeping this in mind, you wouldn’t want to be straining your neck to watch the television. This would not be comfortable at all.
Our Television and Frame
We get lots of questions about not only how high to hang a television, but also what kind of TV we have. Before moving into our current house, Henry and I was trying to figure out what to hang over our mantle. Henry definitely wanted a TV and I wanted a piece of art. I mean as if we didn’t have enough TVs in our home already.
So, we came to an agreement and purchased The Frame from Samsung. The Frame is not just a TV with high-resolution picture quality, it is a canvas that reflects your style. It gives you the opportunity to change your space whenever you choose. You can go from watching a ballgame to a beautiful piece of art with the touch of a button. In our opinion, The Frame was definitely worth the money! You can also upload your own art.
We also added a Deco Frame around the television. A Deco Frame is a decorative frame exclusively made and compatible with The Frame by Samsung. Deco Frames surround the TV and are super easy to install. They come premade in various sizes and styles. We chose antique gold to tie in with other gold accents within our home.

Great advice! Height placement is key.
March 29, 2021 at 3:52 pmBeautiful room! We plan on a 65” Frame tv above our fireplace in our upcoming new build. Could you provide the measurements for the height/width of your fireplace surround, and the distance from the top of the mantle to the bottom of the frame tv, please? Also, perhaps you have discussed this in another post, but what type of surface is your fireplace wall? Is it finished drywall? A plaster type finish? I love the simplicity and elegance. Thank you so much.
