A couple of years ago we were planning our new master bedroom and now we are in the same stages, but this time on the flip house. No matter what type of home you are planning or buying, a master bedroom is a very important part of the home. It is your sanctuary, your place to relax, a place to get away from it all. Don’t you agree we all need a place like this?
There are several things that are essential to a master bedroom. Some of those things may be pretty evident and would come to mind when you picture the perfect master bedroom suite. Others you may not think about. Location, for instance, should be away from the rest of the home but should also encompass beautiful views of the exterior. The perfect master bedroom should also be spacious but yet have a cozy feel. A master bedroom should be your own mini-retreat, somewhere to get away from it all and call your own space.
Good Location
The location of a master bedroom is the key. It’s important to think about this bedroom as a place of relaxation and away from the rest of the house. Some say they prefer the bedroom on the main floor and others say they would rather it be on a different floor. I can see both points, but do keep in mind that both may be quite noisy if they do no have some type of separation. We always suggest a hallway to create this separation, no matter what floor you prefer. Also, keep in mind what is above and underneath the master bedroom. This can affect the amount of noise level surrounding the bedroom. If you are building or remodeling these are things to look for in a plan or point out to your architect.
It’s not only about what the master bedroom is away from, but what it’s close to. When we were planning the farmhouse several years back, the master bedroom was next to the laundry room. This was already incorporated into the plan we purchased. This location was such a wonderful idea! As I am the one doing the laundry a majority of the time, it was very convenient for me. Another thing that is definitely a no-brainer is to be in close proximity to a larger bathroom. This preferably will be located within the master bedroom, but if not, should be very close by.
Great View/Lots of Light
This is probably not one many people would think about, but I think having a good view from the master bedroom is so important! I understand everyone not being able to look out their window and have an ocean or a scenic mountain view. But when planning your bedroom location, try to situate it so that it will have peaceful views.
Whether this is a landscaped backyard or just some trees. The natural light the windows will allow to flow throughout the room will also create a light and airy feel in the bedroom.
Cozy Vibes
When walking into a master bedroom doesn’t everyone want to feel those cozy vibes? Especially when it’s your own bedroom! Feeling cozy is the first step to relaxation.
All these feelings can come from things such as cozy bedding, candles, pillows, rugs, and even lighting. Neutral and earth-toned colors such as greys, beiges, and browns tend to provide a peaceful backdrop. Adding in soft, textured blankets and pillows not only makes things look cozier but allows you to feel relaxed.
And of course, don’t forget that the most important requirement for a cozy bedroom is a great bed! Your bed is the focal point of the room. So make sure to choose one that fits the space and reflects the style you are going for.
Spacious Closet and Bathroom
It’s s no surprise that the icing on the cake to any master bedroom is a spacious bathroom and closet. While designing the layout of our new flip house, creating a spacious master bedroom closet and bathroom was very important.

If you don’t have the luxury of having a large closet and bathroom, make the best use of what you have. Creating things such as a custom closet organizational system and opting to recess your shower shelves can make a smaller closet and bathroom work for you. Sometimes getting creative is what it takes to utilize the space you do have!
