How to Clean Couch Cushions

We use our living room couch a lot! We all love lounging on it and it’s the comfiest spot to relax and watch movie. But I’ve noticed the cushions need another good cleaning. Cushions are a magnet for dirt, stains, and odors, especially when you have a pet and teenage boys. I’ve had plenty of practice cleaning our couch. So in this article, I’m going to share some tips on how to clean couch cushions and keep them looking and smelling fresh.

Keep in mind that different couch cushion materials require different cleaning methods. Always check the care label on your cushions for specific instructions. If your cushions are delicate or heavily stained, it may be best to take them to a professional cleaner.

Cleaning Fabric Couch Cushions

Fabric couch cushions are the most common type of cushion and can be cleaned with a few simple steps:

Step 1: Vacuum the Cushions

Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any loose dirt, dust, and debris from the cushions. Be sure to get into all the crevices and corners to ensure a thorough clean.

Step 2: Spot Clean Stains

If you notice any stains on the cushions, use a stain remover specifically designed for upholstery. Apply a small amount to the stain and gently rub it with a clean cloth. Be sure to test the stain remover on an area that is hidden first to ensure it doesn’t damage the fabric.

Step 3: Wash the Cushion Covers

Remove the cushion covers and check the care label for washing instructions. Most covers can be machine washed on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Be sure to avoid hot water and high heat when drying to prevent shrinking or damage to the fabric.

Step 4: Freshen Up the Cushions

To remove any lingering odors, sprinkle baking soda over the cushions and let it sit for a few hours. Vacuum up the baking soda with the upholstery attachment, and your cushions will smell fresh and clean.

Cleaning Leather Couch Cushions

Leather couch cushions require a bit more care than fabric cushions to avoid damage to the leather. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Vacuum the Cushions

Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any loose dirt, dust, and debris from the cushions. Be sure to get into all the crevices and corners to ensure a thorough clean.

Step 2: Spot Clean Stains

If you notice any stains on the cushions, use a leather cleaner specifically designed for leather upholstery. Apply a small amount to the stain and gently rub it with a clean cloth. Be sure to test the leather cleaner on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t damage the leather.

Step 3: Condition the Leather

After cleaning, apply a leather conditioner to the cushions to keep the leather soft. Apply a small amount to a clean cloth and rub it into the leather in a circular motion. Be sure to follow the instructions on the conditioner for best results.

Step 4: Freshen Up the Cushions

To remove any lingering odors, place a small dish of white vinegar near the cushions overnight. The vinegar will absorb any odors, leaving your cushions smelling fresh.

Cleaning Microfiber Couch Cushions

Microfiber couch cushions are soft and comfortable but can be tricky to clean. Here’s how to get them looking and smelling fresh:

Step 1: Vacuum the Cushions

Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any loose dirt, dust, and debris from the cushions. Be sure to get into all the crevices and corners to ensure a thorough clean.

Step 2: Spot Clean Stains

If you notice any stains on the cushions, use a microfiber cleaner specifically designed for microfiber upholstery. Apply a small amount to the stain and gently rub it with a clean cloth. Be sure to test the cleaner on a hidden area first to ensure it doesn’t damage the fabric.

Step 3: Remove Odors

Next, mix a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle and lightly mist the cushions. Gently scrub the cushions with a soft-bristled brush or a clean cloth, taking care not to scrub too hard or saturate the fabric. Rinse the cushions with a clean, damp cloth and allow them to air dry.
