I cannot believe we’re already talking about Christmas decor. If you’ve been following along, you know Henry and I just moved into a new house, and while the boxes are still being unpacked, I couldn’t resist diving into holiday decorating. There’s something about Christmas that makes a house feel like home, even if you’re still trying to figure out which light switch controls the living room lamps.
This year, we’re blending the old with the new, bringing pieces we’ve cherished for years and mixing in fresh finds to complement our new space. Let me take you through our favorite Christmas home decor ideas that have turned our new home into a cozy winter wonderland.
A Garland for Every Space: Norfolk Pine Magic
Let’s talk about garlands. Specifically, my new obsession: is Norfolk Pine garland. I’ve draped this beauty everywhere! It looks so real and is easy to use. It is also a great base for layering with other garland. This garland is very popular and has already sold out in several places.
The mantle in our living room was calling for something lush, so I layered a Norfolk Pine garland across it, letting it trail down the sides for a natural, effortless look. I tucked in some evergreen stems to make it look more full.
But why stop at the mantle? Around our front door, I used another strand of Norfolk Pine garland. I love how it frames the entryway and gives every guest an immediate holiday welcome. And yes, I may or may not have used another garland along the stair rail. What can I say? I’m a sucker for that classic Christmas greenery!
Christmas Tree Styling: Velvet & Wood
Our tree is always the heart of our holiday decor. I ordered a new tree this year from Wayfair. I went with the Nordic Spruce Medium Tree with Clear Lights. For the money, I am very happy with the tree. My only negative is that I would have gone with the nine-foot. I was a little nervous it would be too tall, but I think our ceilings are just a little over nine-foot, so it would have probably worked.
This year, I went with a cozy, understated palette that feels festive and timeless.
Here’s what’s on our tree:
- Velvet Ball Ornaments: These little treasures add a touch of luxury, and I adore the way they reflect the soft glow of the tree lights. I picked a mix of dark browns and cream to tie in with the rest of the decor.
- Velvet Ribbon: Instead of a traditional tree topper, I tied a long velvet ribbon at the very top of the tree. It cascades down like a soft, elegant waterfall.
- Wooden Beads: A simple strand of wooden beads gives the tree a cozy, rustic vibe that balances out the richness of the velvet.
Faux Lit Trees in Pots or Baskets
One of the easiest ways to bring Christmas into every room is with faux-lit trees in pots or baskets. These little beauties are perfect for corners, entryways, or even on the kitchen counter.
Last year, I added the Studio McGee spruce pre-lit potted tree to our decor lineup, and I loved it so much, that I decided to use it again this year. If these are out of stock, try the Wayfair Norfolk Pine Potted Tree, it’s another great-looking one. These trees are the perfect size for tucking into a woven basket for a more organic look or leaving it as is in the beautiful pot it is already in. I’ve styled one upstairs in the top landing and another in our entryway. They add the prettiest twinkle without taking up too much space.
If you’re looking for an effortless way to sprinkle a little Christmas cheer around your home, these faux trees are it.
Blending Old and New
One of the best parts of decorating this year was finding ways to incorporate the old with the new. As we used several items we have gathered over the year, we incorporated a few new things to freshen up the look such as adding a beautiful velvet bow to the garland on my staircase and new velvet ornaments to our tree.
Our wooden nativity set is always a staple, and I gave it a fresh update by placing it on a new sideboard surrounded by garland. The look is completely different with two brass wall sconces on each side here in our new home. Seeing those familiar pieces in a new setting made them feel extra special this year.
Moving into a new home during the holidays has been a whirlwind, but decorating for Christmas has made it feel like ours. Whether it’s the glow of the pre-lit tree in the entryway or the garland draped on every surface imaginable, our house is starting to feel like the perfect backdrop for this season’s memories.
