Are you surprised? Yep, we remodeled another home. After months of searching, we finally found the perfect one in the perfect area, and we were so eager to get started. The fun (and maybe a little stressful) part was that we only had 4 1/2 weeks to get it all done! More on that soon, but first, let’s talk about the plan and answer the big question: How much does it cost to remodel a house? Let’s take a look at what we had budgeted for this project and then we can discuss if we went over or under on this budget.
The truth is, cost can vary depending on the size of your house, the scope of the remodel, and of course, different tastes and styles. To help you get a better idea, we put together a breakdown of what we planned on spending on our current home remodel which is around 3700 square feet or so. This should give you a solid estimate to work from, whether you’re just dreaming about a future project or getting ready to dive in.

Breaking It Down
1. Kitchen
The kitchen is often the most expensive room to remodel. For us, it included demolition, new cabinets (which were a huge investment), gorgeous quartz countertops, updated lighting, new appliances, painting, and updated fixtures like the sink faucet and hardware. This area added up to about $57,000. Definitely worth it, though, considering it’s the heart of the home!
2. Master Bath
Bathrooms are another spot where costs can quickly climb, especially if you want to add in tile work. For our master bathroom, we chose a beautiful fluted vanity from Wayfair with a luxurious countertop, and some fresh lighting. Of course, the tile (in both the shower and flooring) added to the cost, bringing this room to $11,200.
3. Laundry Room
You might not think of the laundry room as a big-ticket item, but when you add in tile floors, new cabinets for storage, and a fresh countertop, the price adds up. We spent $5,500 here, but now it’s a bright and functional space where laundry doesn’t feel like such a chore.
4. Half Bath
Half baths are a bit more budget-friendly since there’s no need for a shower or tub. We kept things simple with updated cabinetry, lighting, fixtures, and painting. This space came to $1,700.
5. Upstairs Bathrooms
With two upstairs bathrooms, we had to be mindful of our budget, but we still wanted them to feel fresh and updated. The bulk of the cost here came from cabinetry, countertops, and tile work (again, for both floors and the shower). These two rooms together added up to $8,800.
6. Extras
We can’t forget about those little things that always sneak up on you during a remodel! From skim coating four rooms to get rid of that dreaded popcorn ceiling, painting the rest of the house, to upgrading the light fixtures in the foyer, dining room, and other bedrooms—these extras totaled $13,500. And honestly? Totally worth every penny.
How to Stay on Budget
- Prioritize Your Projects: Focus on high-impact areas like the kitchen and master bathroom first, then move to the smaller, more cosmetic updates.
- DIY Where You Can: We saved some money by DIYing the kitchen hood and a few other small projects. If you’re handy, go for it!
- Set Aside an Extra 10% for Surprises: Trust me, there will be surprises. Whether it’s an unexpected plumbing issue or realizing that the cabinets you love are more expensive than planned, having a buffer is essential.
Final Thoughts
Remodeling a home is no small feat, but it’s an amazing way to make your space truly yours. While we budgeted $97,700 for this remodel, every home and budget is different. The most important thing is to make choices that fit your lifestyle and design dreams.
