Bathroom Window Ideas

There’s something magical about natural light in a bathroom. It brightens up the space, makes it feel fresh and inviting, and enhances every little detail. In our homes, we always look for ways to incorporate natural light, and today, I want to share some bathroom window ideas that have completely changed the way we view this space.

One of our favorite spots for a bathroom window? Right behind the bathtub. It’s functional, creates a dreamy focal point, and invites the outdoors in, making every bath feel like a mini-retreat. You get the flow of natural light, the visual interest of a thoughtfully framed view, and, let’s be honest, the mood-boosting relaxation that comes with a serene atmosphere.

Why Do We Love a Window Behind a Tub?

Placing a window behind a tub makes sense for so many reasons:

  1. Natural Light: Soft, diffused light spilling over your tub is an instant mood-setter. It elevates your bathroom from utilitarian to spa-like.
  2. Views: If you’re lucky enough to have a picturesque yard or a tree-lined street, this is your chance to bring that beauty indoors.
  3. Focal Point: A window behind the tub naturally draws the eye. Pair it with some statement tile or a freestanding tub, and you’ve got a magazine-worthy design moment.
  4. Flow and Functionality: The placement feels balanced and intentional, without disrupting your vanity or shower zones.
  5. Mood and Relaxation: Soaking in a tub, bathed in soft natural light, does wonders for the soul.

But let’s be real—sometimes installing a window behind the tub isn’t feasible. Whether it’s a budget constraint, the existing layout, or a less-than-stellar view, don’t worry. There are plenty of other ways to add light and life to your bathroom.

Other Bathroom Window Placement Ideas

Here are a few alternatives to consider:

  1. A Small Window in the Shower
A well-placed shower window can completely transform this space and even showcase an often-overlooked custom tile shower. Opt for frosted glass or install the window high enough to maintain privacy while letting in light.
  2. Large Windows Beside the Vanity
Flanking your vanity with big windows not only provides amazing natural light for getting ready but also opens up the room. In our recent remodel we have a large window right beside our vanity. I am loving the view as I get ready as well as all the natural light it gives me as I’m getting ready!
  3. High-Set Windows Behind the Toilet
If wall space is limited, a narrow, high-set window can work wonders without sacrificing privacy.

Bathroom Window Coverage Ideas

When it comes to window coverings, we like to keep things simple and stylish. Here are our go-to options:

  1. Curtains: Sheer or lightweight curtains can soften the look of your bathroom while offering privacy. Our favorite curtains, no matter what room of your home, is the Belgian Flax Linen Curtain from Pottery Barn.
  2. Frosted or Textured Glass: For a minimalist look, consider frosted or textured glass. It obscures the view without blocking light and eliminates the need for additional coverings.
  3. Shutters or Blinds: If you prefer more coverage, shutters or blinds work beautifully. We’ve seen louvered shutters add so much charm to a traditional bathroom, while sleek blinds suit modern designs perfectly. Our favorite blind to use in a bathroom is the Levolor Woven Natural Shade from Lowes. We have used the Origami color in several of our homes and love it!
  4. Open Views: When privacy isn’t an issue (like in a secluded yard or a second-story bathroom), leave your windows uncovered. It’s the best way to soak in those gorgeous views and maximize natural light.

The Bottom Line

Whether building, remodeling, or finding creative ways to work with your existing bathroom layout, natural light is always a good idea. In our opinion, adding a window to your bathroom will elevate your design and overall look and feel of the space. And with the right window coverings, you can strike the perfect balance between privacy and beauty.
