How to Fold Towels

It’s not often that you hear someone get really excited about the art of folding towels. However, in today’s blog post, I’m going to share with you a topic that might seem not so important but is incredibly valuable in our daily lives: towel folding. Yes, you heard it right! We’re going to talk about how to fold towels neatly, efficiently, and stylishly.

There’s a certain sense of satisfaction that comes from seeing a pile of clean, neatly folded towels on a shelf. Although I feel like this doesn’t happen much in our home with two teenage boys. But, when it does happen feel like my home looks organized. Plus, there’s a good chance you’ll impress your house guests with your linen closet’s stunning organization!

Why Should You Properly Fold Towels?

Before we get into the ‘how,’ let’s discuss the ‘why.’ The most important thing to consider is that properly folded towels are easier to store, freeing up valuable closet space. Also, an organized stack of folded towels brings visual harmony to your linen closet or shelves, providing a sense of serenity and order. Well-folded towels are more likely to dry out completely between uses, thus reducing musty odors. Folding towels properly also extends the lifespan of your towels by preventing unnecessary wear and tear.

The Basic Fold

Let’s start with the most common method – the basic fold. It’s straightforward and efficient, and your towels will stack perfectly.

  1. Spread your towel out on a flat surface, face-down.
  2. Fold the towel in half lengthwise. Make sure to align the edges.
  3. Fold it in half lengthwise again, creating a long, narrow rectangle.
  4. Finally, fold the towel in thirds crosswise.

This method works wonderfully for both bath towels and hand towels. It’s the go-to technique for a quick, neat fold.

The Roll-Up

Next is the roll-up, a favorite for those wanting to save space or for packing towels in a suitcase.

  1. Lay your towel flat on a surface.
  2. Fold the towel in half lengthwise.
  3. Start from one end and begin rolling the towel tightly toward the other end.
  4. For bath towels, you might want to fold them in half again before rolling for a tighter roll.

This method should provide you with a neat cylindrical roll of towel that’s perfect for stuffing into tight spaces or lining up in a decorative basket. This is one you will want to keep in mind and remember for your next vacation.

The Spa Fold

Now let’s get a bit fancier with the spa fold. This method is a bit more complicated but creates a luxurious presentation that you often see in high-end hotels or spas.

  1. Lay your towel flat.
  2. Fold the towel into thirds lengthwise.
  3. Fold it in half crosswise.
  4. Now fold it in half crosswise again.
  5. Turn it over, and there you have it – the elegant spa fold!

This technique is best suited for display in guest rooms or bathrooms where you want to add a touch of sophistication.

The Origami Fold

For those wanting to have a bit of fun with their towels, there’s the origami fold. From creating cute animals to making elegant shapes, the possibilities are endless. This is normally a fold you will find in on cruise ships and hotels. Today, we will cover a simple fan fold.

  1. Lay your towel flat.
  2. Starting from the short side, make an accordion fold (alternating folds forward and back).
  3. Once you’ve accordion-folded the entire towel, fold it in half so the folds are on the outside.
  4. Place the folded towel on a table or bed with the loose ends facing down.
  5. Spread out the folds on the top, and you have a beautiful fan-shaped towel decoration!

Remember, practice makes perfect. Don’t be disheartened if you don’t get it right on the first go. Keep trying and you will get better.

The Art of Maintenance

Once you’ve perfected the art of folding towels, maintaining order is key. When taking a towel from the stack, ensure to re-stack them neatly. Regularly refolding towels after laundering helps to keep them fresh and crisp.

Who knew that learning how to fold towels could offer such satisfaction and creativity? Start with the basic fold and as you become more confident, venture into the roll-up, spa, or origami folds. You’ll soon find that the linen closet has transformed from a simple storage area into a stylish, organized, and satisfying space.

You are now full of the knowledge to turn your towels into neat, space-saving additions to your home. It’s all about taking pride in the small details that contribute to a more harmonious and organized living space. So go ahead, get folding, and add that touch of crisp order to your home today.
