How to Choose Curtains For a Living Room

Although curtains are a common window treatment for a living room, choosing the perfect curtains for this room can be a bit overwhelming. There are many factors to consider, such as what function they will have and what style should you choose. But with a little bit of knowledge and some careful shopping, you can find curtains that will enhance the look of your living room and make it feel more comfortable and inviting.

Function and Style

Curtains are one of the most versatile window treatments. Not only do they provide privacy and block out light, but they can also be used to control the temperature in a room. In the winter, heavy curtains can help to keep a room warm by trapping heat near the window. In the summer, lightweight curtains can be used to keep a room cool by allowing air to flow freely.

Additionally, curtains can be used to add a touch of style to a room. In my opinion, this is the most important aspect of curtains. Personally, I’m not a fan of patterns on curtains. I prefer solid neutral colors with some visible texture.

There are a variety of curtain color options. However, there are a few things you can keep in mind to help narrow down your search. First, consider the overall style of your living room. Do you want the curtains to blend in or stand out? If you’re going for a more subtle look, choose curtains in a neutral shade that will complement your existing living room furniture and décor.

If going bold is your style, then you may want to think about adding some color or patterns with your living room curtains. But if you do go this route, it’s even more important to consider the existing furniture, pillows, and other decor. Contrast can be a good thing, but the wrong kind of contrast can make a room less inviting.

When choosing curtains, it’s important to consider the material. Heavy fabrics like velvet or brocade are best for living rooms that get a lot of sunlight, as they will help to reduce glare. Lighter fabrics like cotton or linen are better for living rooms that receive less light, as they will help to brighten the space.

In general, thicker fabrics will provide more insulation and privacy, while thinner fabrics will allow more light to enter the room. Ultimately, the best fabric for your curtains will depend on your personal preferences and the needs of your space.

It is important to hang curtains correctly in order to get the most out of them including functionality and looks. The first step is to decide how high you want to hang your curtains. A general rule of thumb is that they should be hung about six inches above the window frame, but you may want to adjust this depending on the look you’re going for. Our Favorites

As mentioned above, I prefer going with more of a neutral tone of curtains for most rooms especially the living room. Although it really depends on the overall style of the space, my top choice for fabric is linen. Here are a few of my favorite living room curtains. These are all ones that I have used or am currently using, and love them all.

My top choice is the Belgian Flax Linen Curtain from Pottery Barn. This Belgian curtain is blended with gentle flax fibers allowing gentle filters of sunlight to enter the room. This material adds a classic look to the living area while adding in some soft texture.

Another one of my favorites is the Seaton Textured Cotton Curtain from Pottery Barn. This curtain creates the perfect ambiance with the right amount of sunlight coming through. The Seaton is a textural cotton weave that adds a more casual feel to a living area. It also comes in a variety of colors and sizes.

For a more elegant, formal look you may want to check out the Velvet Myreon Darkening Curtain from Wayfair. The meticulously constructed velvet curtain is one that will add glamour to any room. The soft velvet material comes in several color and size options.
