If you’ve been watching our Instagram stories lately, you may have caught a hint, hint that something exciting could be in the works… and yes, it might just involve a brand-new build.
For those who don’t know, we sold the home we built and live in a remodel we originally thought would be a temporary stop while building again. But (as life tends to go), plans shifted, timelines stretched, and we’ve only just now started getting into the early planning stages of what could be our next build.
Living in a remodel has given us a new perspective — and looking back on our last home build, there are a few things we’d do differently this time around. Here are four things we would change when we build again.
We Would Build Smaller(But, Smarter)
Our last home was beautiful, no doubt about it. But after living there — and now settling into a smaller, remodeled space — we’ve come to realize that we simply don’t need as much square footage as we once thought.
If we build again, we’ll be scaling down just a bit and designing with more intention. Fewer unused rooms, more thoughtful spaces that truly serve our day-to-day life. Smaller doesn’t mean less — it means smarter, cozier, and more purposeful in every square foot.
More Windows
One thing we miss from our last home? The natural light. You can never have too many windows — especially if you’re lucky enough to have a great view. Sunlight pouring in throughout the day makes such a difference in how a home feels. We’ll be more intentional about window placement and size, capturing morning light, framing outdoor views, and letting the inside and outside blend together in the best way.
Open Floor Plan, But Cozy Feel
We still love an open floor plan, but after living in different layouts, we’ve realized we crave a bit more separation between spaces. Not closed off — just enough definition to make each area feel cozy and intentional.
We’re envisioning things like cased openings or even interior windows that keep the space feeling connected, but with a sense of purpose and character. A dining nook that feels like its own moment, a living room that feels grounded, or a quiet corner that invites you to slow down — that’s the kind of warmth we’re going for next go around.
Stick to a Smarter Budget
Let’s be honest — during our first build, it was easy to get caught up in the excitement and say yes to things that weren’t necessary. This time around, we’re being more mindful. We know what’s worth investing in, and where we can save without sacrificing style or function. A beautiful home doesn’t have to mean going over budget, and we’re excited to be more strategic and creative the second time around.
We’ve learned a lot through both building and remodeling—lessons that led us to identify four things we would change. If you’ve been following along, you already know how much we love designing spaces that truly feel like home. And if you’ve picked up on a few subtle hints in our stories… let’s just say, you’re not imagining things.
Planning is officially underway, and we’re so excited to share more with you soon!
