How Much Do New Windows Cost?

If you’re planning to upgrade your home, understanding the cost of new windows is an important step. Henry and I recently have tackled this project on several occasion, swapping out our old windows for something more modern and energy-efficient as well as installing brand new ones into a new build. Spoiler alert: the price can vary widely depending on several factors, but the results are well worth it! Let’s break it all down so you can plan your own window project confidently.

Cost Breakdown

The cost of new windows depends on several factors, but here’s a general idea:

  • Standard Windows: $300–$700 per window
  • High-End Custom Windows: $800–$2,500 or more per window
  • Labor Costs: $150–$300 per window (on average)
  • Additional Costs: Expect extra for things like permits, removal of old windows, or custom framing, and interior and exterior color.

For a typical home with 10 to 15 windows, you could be looking at $6,000–$15,000 for a mid-range upgrade.

Factors Affecting Price

1. Window Type

The style of window you choose has a huge impact on the price. Double-hung windows tend to be more affordable, while casement, very large windows, and different shaped windows are on the higher end. Think about both functionality and aesthetics when deciding!

2. Material

The material of the frame plays a big role in cost:

  • Vinyl: Budget-friendly and low-maintenance.
  • Wood: Classic and beautiful but pricier and requires upkeep.
  • Fiberglass: Durable and energy-efficient but comes at a premium price.

Choose a material that balances your style preferences with your budget.

3. Energy Efficiency

Want to keep your home cozy and your bills low? Opt for double or triple-pane glass, and look for low-E coatings to reflect heat. While these features add to the upfront cost, they’ll save you money in the long run.

4. Customization

If you’re dreaming of a specific color, grid design, or hardware finish, be prepared for added costs. Custom windows are beautiful but can quickly increase your budget, so decide where to splurge and where to save.

New vs. Replacement Windows

It’s important to distinguish between new construction windows and replacement windows.

  • New Construction Windows: Installed in a new home or when walls are being reconfigured. They’re often more expensive because they require additional framing and labor.
  • Replacement Windows: Fit into existing frames, which makes them faster and cheaper to install.

If your current frames are in good shape, replacement windows are usually the way to go.

Are New Windows Worth the Cost?

Henry and I hesitated at first because of the cost, but replacing our windows was one of the best home upgrades we’ve ever made to our homes that we have remodeled. Not only do they look beautiful, the value of the home went up and sold much more quickly!

When building a new home, investing in high-quality windows is absolutely worth it. Not only do they enhance the overall aesthetic and curb appeal of your home, but they also set the foundation for long-term comfort and energy efficiency. New construction windows allow you to customize everything—from the size and style to the frame material and glass type—ensuring that they complement your design vision.

Our Advice

If you’re ready to take the plunge, start by getting a few quotes from reputable companies. Ask about warranties, energy ratings, and any potential rebates. And don’t forget to budget a little extra for surprises—because, let’s be real, every home project seems to have at least one! Replacing windows is a significant investment, but the benefits are worth it in the long run.
