In just a few months, we’ll be moving into our new build, a home we’ve been dreaming of for a while now. But before we can make that transition, we need to sell our current house.
Funny enough, when we bought this place earlier this year, we knew it would only be temporary. So we planned ahead: every decision we made around the exterior of our home had one goal in mind, resale.
As we get ready to list in the spring, I wanted to share the 5 easy, budget-friendly, quick curb appeal upgrades we tackled that made a huge difference in how the home looks from the street. These small changes can seriously boost buyer interest without breaking the bank.
1. Cleaned Up the Landscaping: Most Important Curb Appeal Update
Overgrown bushes, weedy flowerbeds, and a wild lawn can be a huge turnoff to buyers and that’s exactly what we were working with. We bought this home from a sweet elderly lady who simply hadn’t been able to keep up with the yard over the years. The bushes were totally overgrown, weeds had taken over, and the beds were a mess. But with a few simple tools, a lot of sweat, and some fresh mulch, the transformation was honestly amazing. We trimmed back shrubs, pulled weeds, and gave everything a good cleanup. It instantly looked like a completely different house!
Henry edged all the flowerbeds, which created such a nice, clean line around the yard. He always says it’s one of the easiest ways to make landscaping look polished.
Pro tip: Even just mowing the lawn and cleaning up the edges can make a place look loved and well cared for.
2. Painted the Shutters

Our original shutters were faded and dull, and replacing them wasn’t in the budget. So we picked a bold, modern color that popped against our exterior. We painted them ourselves in a weekend and it saved us the money of hiring it out.
Pro tip: Painting your shutters yourself is an easy weekend project that refreshes your home’s look without the cost of replacement or hiring professionals.
3. Updated the Front Door
Your front door is one of the first things buyers notice which is also a very important upgrade before selling. We decided to replace ours with a beautiful wood door because we love the warm, classic look it adds to the home. If you’re looking to save money, though, a fresh coat of paint on your existing door can do wonders to brighten the entryway without the cost of a full replacement.
Pro tip: Updating your front door hardware or simply painting the door can give your home an instant facelift without breaking the bank.
4. Decluttered the Yard & Porch
We removed random garden tools, unwanted bird baths, overgrown shrubs, and pulled weeds from the porch and yard. Less clutter = more charm. Buyers want to imagine themselves in the space and they can’t do that if it’s filled with your stuff.
Pro tip: Tuck away tools and any extra items in a shed or garage during showings to keep the space feeling open and inviting.
5. Added Greenery & Flowers
Nothing beats the “pop” of seasonal color and greenery. As one of our favorite curb appeal updates, we planted some inexpensive flowers in pots, hung a few planters, and added a potted tree near the entryway. It instantly made the space feel more welcoming and full of life.
Pro tip: Symmetry near the front door (like matching planters) adds a polished, inviting feel that really enhances your home’s curb appeal.
