How to Decorate Your Porch for Fall

There is no better time of the year than fall to do some porch sitting. I love sitting on the swing in the cooler weather watching the leaves change colors. A porch is a wonderful place to cozy up and enjoy this beautiful season.

While enjoying your porch during this time of year, it is fun to add in some of those cozy fall vibes. It doesn’t have to be major, but with a few easy additions you can make your fall porch your favorite place to be.

I thought it would be fun to share some pictures of my sister’s porch. It is for sure one of my favorite front porches and she has decorated it so beautifully by adding in just a few fall touches here and there. Here are a few tips of how she integrated fall into her 1950’s front porch.

Layered Flowers and Plants

Using flowers and different types of greenery is always great for front porches. Normally my sister keeps it pretty simple with two ferns on each side of the front door, but as you can see, she added a few yellow and white mums for fall.

Layering flower in kind and color is always a great idea. She used a taller pot in the back for some height. The potted fern was already there, so that was easy, she then added in a few different sized mums around the taller pots. This layering will create interest and variety.

Keep in mind to always work with what you have if you can. Then just add in a few new things where needed.

Pumpkins of Different Sizes and Colors

Pumpkins, pumpkins, and more pumpkins. I love pumpkins. They are my favorite. But, different colored pumpkins are even better! Pumpkins are a must when decorating your porch for fall.

If you are like me and don’t like the norm and like the more neutral vibe, stick to the lighter colored ones. I love using white and green as she has used here.

A great idea when using pumpkins is to make them stackable. To do this, just gently break off the stem of the ones you will be stacking. Then create some height by starting with a larger pumpkin on bottom and moving up with smaller ones. She used some smaller ones which looked so adorable. The smaller ones are great for paring next to a larger pumpkin.

Pillows and Throws

Pillows and throws are always a great addition to a porch. I don’t know about you, but nothing says cozy other than a comfy pillow and throw. They just truly gives off the fall vibe for the cooler temperatures. Just makes you want to cozy up and relax!

Of course the best place to add pillows and throws would be on a swing, bench, chair, or rocker. If you don’t have any of these options on your porch, another idea is to add them to a basket. Placing a basket or two with a fall colored pillow or throw would be a great addition to the porch.

Warmer Tone Rugs

Adding rugs in neutral warmer tones is another way to add fall vibes to your porch. Rugs are actually one of my favorite ways to add warmth and coziness to a porch area. The contrast of the woven jute rug with the darker brick is also very eye catching.

But don’t be afraid to add in some other colors – maybe even some non-fall colors for a little contrast.

I’m loving the muted blue doormat as well. Both rugs create a homey feel even before you enter the home. Rugs are easy to change out for the seasons, or go neutral and use the same ones all year round.
