How Many Throw Pillows Should You Really Have on a Couch?

As I am working with new clients the question often comes up, “How many throw pillows should you really have on a couch?” I actually ask myself this question as well and often remind myself of some simple balance basics for when deciding on how many throw pillows to have on a couch. Throw pillows can completely transform the look and feel of your living space, but getting the balance right is crucial.

The Size of the Sofa Matters

The size of your sofa definitely influences the number of throw pillows you should have. If you have a larger sectional or a long sofa, you can comfortably accommodate more pillows without it looking cluttered. If your couch is smaller, too many pillows can overwhelm the space and leave little room for sitting. As a general rule of thumb, start with the “one for each corner” approach and then add more if the space allows it. You want to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, not one where guests are constantly moving pillows out of the way.

One for Each Corner

A good starting point for any sofa, regardless of size, is to place one throw pillow in each corner. This creates a balanced and symmetrical look that’s pleasing to the eye. For a standard-sized couch, this often means having two pillows on each end. Don’t be afraid to mix it up a little. Add a larger pillow behind a smaller one, or use different textures and patterns to create depth and interest.

Cleaning Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are not just decorative; they also need to be practical. It’s essential to consider how easy they are to clean, especially if they will be in a high-traffic area like the living room. Look for pillows with removable covers that can be thrown in the washing machine. This makes it easy to keep them fresh and looking their best.

For those with non-removable covers, spot cleaning is the way to go. Using the Bissell Portable Upholstery Cleaner is my favorite way to clean throw pillows because its super easy and works so well on spots and stains. Regularly fluffing your pillows also helps maintain their shape and keeps them looking plump and inviting.

Our Favorite Throw Pillows

Choosing the right throw pillows can be a delightful experience. Here are a few of our favorites that blend style and practicality:

  • Linen Blend Pillows: These offer a sophisticated look with a texture that’s both comfortable and durable. Linen is a timeless fabric that works well in both modern and traditional settings.
  • Velvet Pillows: Perfect for adding a touch of luxury to your space, velvet pillows are soft to the touch and come in a variety of rich colors that can make your couch pop.
  • Patterned Pillows: Don’t shy away from bold patterns. They can add a lot of personality to your sofa. Stripes, florals, and geometric designs are all fantastic choices that can complement your existing decor.
  • Textured Pillows: Think about pillows with unique textures like knits, weaves, or embroidery. These can add an interesting visual and tactile element to your couch.

Ultimately, the number of throw pillows you have on your couch should enhance your living space’s comfort and style without making it feel cluttered. Start with one for each corner, consider the size of your sofa, keep cleanliness in mind, and have fun choosing pillows that reflect your personal style.
