English Cottage House Plans

There’s something about an English cottage that feels timeless. Whether it’s the steep rooflines, charming arched doorways, painted brick exteriors, or storybook-like character, English cottage homes have a warmth and charm that’s difficult to replicate with other architectural styles.

Over the years, we’ve fallen in love with English cottage architecture and have incorporated many of its design elements into the homes we’ve built and designed. The combination of timeless curb appeal, thoughtful architectural details, and comfortable living spaces makes it one of our favorite home styles.

Because of our love for this style, we’ve begun creating our own collection of English cottage house plans. Our goal is to provide homeowners with beautiful, thoughtfully designed homes that capture the charm and character of traditional English cottages while incorporating the features and functionality needed for modern living.

We’ve already released our first collection of English cottage house plans, which you’ll find below. From charming one-story cottages to larger family homes, each plan is designed with curb appeal, livability, and timeless design in mind.

Before we dive into the plans themselves, let’s take a closer look at what makes an English cottage house plan so special and why this style continues to be one of the most popular architectural styles today.

What Makes an English Cottage House Plan?

English cottage homes are known for their charm, character, and timeless appeal. While every cottage design is unique, most English cottage house plans share several common features that help create their distinctive look.

Some of the most recognizable characteristics include:

  • Steeply pitched rooflines
  • Painted brick, stone, or stucco exteriors
  • Arched doors and windows
  • Decorative trim and architectural details
  • Cozy, welcoming interiors
  • Charming front porches and entryways
  • Warm, lived-in character

Unlike many modern homes that emphasize clean lines and minimalism, English cottages embrace texture, architectural detail, and a sense of history. The result is a home that feels collected, inviting, and full of personality.

One of the reasons we love English cottage house plans so much is that they combine incredible curb appeal with practical floor plans that work beautifully for today’s families. While the exterior may feel inspired by centuries-old architecture, the interiors often feature open living spaces, large kitchens, functional mudrooms, walk-in pantries, and all the conveniences homeowners expect in a modern home.

Features of the English Cottage Style House

Today’s English cottage house plans still retain many of their historic design features that we love while being updated for modern living. Some of the features that English cottage style homes have are front-facing gables, steeply pitched roofs, arched doors, and shutters.

On the interior of the home, you’ll find plenty of open spaces perfect for entertaining as well as cozy nooks for relaxing in privacy. Many English cottage style homes also feature large fireplaces—reflecting their historical past—as well as exposed beams that bring a bit of old-world charm into the interior.

But to meet the needs and wants of current-day homeowners, we will be including open floor plans, large gourmet kitchens, and plenty of storage.

Frequently Asked Questions About English Cottage House Plans

What is an English cottage house?

An English cottage house is a home inspired by traditional cottages found throughout the English countryside. These homes are known for their steep rooflines, charming architectural details, painted brick or stone exteriors, arched openings, and warm, inviting interiors.

What are the defining characteristics of an English cottage?

While every design is unique, most English cottage homes include:

  • Steeply pitched roofs
  • Painted brick, stone, or stucco exteriors
  • Arched doors and windows
  • Decorative trim and architectural details
  • Cozy, welcoming interiors
  • Timeless curb appeal

Are English cottage house plans still popular?

Yes. English cottage house plans have become increasingly popular because they offer timeless architecture that doesn’t follow short-term design trends. Homeowners are drawn to their charm, character, and ability to blend traditional styling with modern floor plans.

Are English cottage homes expensive to build?

Building costs vary based on location, materials, and the level of architectural detail. Features such as steep rooflines, masonry exteriors, and custom trim can increase construction costs, but many English cottage house plans can be adapted to fit a variety of budgets.

Can an English cottage have an open floor plan?

Absolutely. While traditional English cottages often featured smaller rooms, many modern English cottage house plans incorporate open-concept kitchens, dining areas, and living spaces while maintaining the architectural charm of the style.

What exterior materials are commonly used on English cottage homes?

Some of the most popular exterior materials include:

  • Painted brick
  • Natural stone
  • Stucco
  • Cedar accents
  • Wood shutters
  • Copper or metal accents

These materials help create the texture and character that English cottages are known for.

Are English cottage house plans good for families?

Yes. Many modern English cottage plans are designed specifically for families and include features such as open living spaces, dedicated home offices, walk-in pantries, bonus rooms, and spacious primary suites.

What is the difference between an English cottage and a farmhouse?

While both styles are timeless and charming, English cottages typically feature more architectural detail, steeper rooflines, arched openings, and a storybook appearance. Farmhouses generally have simpler forms, cleaner lines, and a more rustic aesthetic.

Are English cottage homes suitable for small lots?

Many English cottage house plans work beautifully on smaller lots because they often emphasize vertical design elements and efficient use of space. However, larger English cottage designs can also be adapted for spacious rural properties.

What roof pitch is typical for an English cottage?

English cottages typically feature steeper roof pitches than many modern homes. The steep rooflines help create the distinctive silhouette that gives English cottage homes their timeless character.

What is the best exterior paint color for an English cottage?

Soft whites, warm creams, muted grays, and earthy tones are all popular choices. White-painted brick exteriors remain one of the most popular finishes because they highlight the architectural details that make English cottage homes so charming.

Why are English cottage homes so appealing?

English cottage homes combine timeless curb appeal, thoughtful architecture, and comfortable living spaces. They feel warm, welcoming, and full of character while still providing all the modern conveniences homeowners want today.
