With summer in full swing, there’s no better time to spruce up your back porch and create an inviting space to relax and entertain. I’m excited to share some back porch ideas on a budget to transform your outdoor area, including a step-by-step guide to DIYing your very own porch swing.
Embrace DIY Projects
One of the best ways to save money while enhancing your back porch is to embrace DIY projects. Not only are they cost-effective, but they also add a personal touch to your space. Let’s start with my favorite project: a DIY porch swing.
Henry has built some type of porch swing for every house we have lived in. A few of these porch swings have been larger bed swings, while a couple have been smaller swings to fit smaller porches.

DIY Porch Swing
There is nothing like swaying on your porch, a cool breeze on your face, and a good book in hand. Sounds dreamy, right? Here’s a quick overview to get you started on making your own porch swing.

Create a Cozy Ambiance
With your new swing in place, let’s enhance the rest of your porch to create a cozy, inviting atmosphere.
Lighting: String lights are an affordable way to add a warm glow to your porch. Drape them along the railing, ceiling, or even around your new swing. Solar-powered options are great for saving on energy costs.
Comfortable Seating: If you have existing furniture, consider giving it a facelift with new cushions or slipcovers. Look for weather-resistant fabrics that will withstand outdoor conditions. You can often find these at discount stores or online sales. My favorite outdoor cusions are Rosalind Sumbrella Chair Seat/Back Cushions from Wayfair. They come in several different color option and are very comfortable.
Greenery and Planters: Plants are a fantastic way to bring life and color to your porch. Opt for low-maintenance varieties like succulents or herbs or even faux shrubs, which are both practical and pretty. DIY planters from old containers or wooden crates can add a rustic charm without the extra cost.
Outdoor Rugs: An outdoor rug can define your space and add a pop of color or pattern. Look for sales or clearance items to find a bargain. A well-placed rug under your swing or seating area can make your porch feel like an extension of your indoor living space.
Decorative Accents: Incorporate personal touches with budget-friendly decor items. Thrift stores and garage sales are treasure troves for unique finds. Another one of my favorite places to find inexpensive deocr items is TJMaxx.
Bring It All Together
By focusing on a few key elements and getting creative with DIY projects, you can transform your back porch into a welcoming retreat without spending a fortune. Now is the perfect time to make your back porch your favorite place to relax and spend time with family!
